It's this time of the year again and like before, there has been a lot of stuff going on with Multi Theft Auto. The development seems to be going well since we have opened the source for the project - there have been over 150 changes made to the code since the last post, making for an average of over 5 commits a day. You can track these changes yourself through our page on Google Code.

Multi Theft Auto now open for business

We have been preparing this announcement for some time - this will mark the end of our "Developer previews". We are working towards releasing the 1.0 version; this version is no longer a "preview" and will be a turning point for the release of Multi Theft Auto.

Why? Today we are marking a new milestone in the history of Multi Theft Auto. After over 11000 revisions since 2004, contributions by over 16 world-wide developers, 1554 files and well over 550.000 lines of mostly C/

Server list problems

We found yet another set of critical bugs that affect all recent versions of Multi Theft Auto (using the new game-monitor.com protocol instead of the now defunct All-Seeing Eye), caused by a developer's poor practice of coding in our server browser.

One bug involves a severely incorrect parsing method of the server list. In the worst case, this means that for a lot of our players, no servers (or only a few) show up at all. This depends on the actual server count registered by the master server list.

As part of our server move from Dallas, Texas in the United States to our custom hardware in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, we have also completed the migration of our IRC server to a new location. Our IRC server is part of the GTAnet IRC network and provides a discussion place for anyone who's interested in Multi Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto or related subjects.

Development report

We would like to give you a little information on what we have been doing on our next version in the last few weeks.

First of all, some changes have been made that significantly affect the performance of several subsystems. For instance, our 2D GUI system, 3D DirectX drawing functions and some entity code (e.g. blips) have been optimized in order to speed up the scripts that use these things.

Progress update and public beta

It's been a while since we really provided a "real" progress update, so we're taking the opportunity to tell everyone about what's been happening under the hood.

The last public beta proved to be very useful, and this has resulted in many new changes and fixes.

As always, a number of crashes have been fixed which should make DM feel more stable. Vehicle interpolation has been tweaked which should make it more efficient, resulting in an increase in FPS. There have also been other changes to areas such as the streamer, which also impact the overall FPS positively. We're hoping that issues of FPS should be reduced for the next public beta.

We're going to have a public test tonight (GMT) of the upcoming DP3 release. We'll be testing the numerous fixes and improvements made over the last month or so. An immediate, high priority error that occured for first-time users trying to install the previous release has forced us to make another update to the Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas Deathmatch game client.

To sum it up, if you were experiencing any serial number (or user account) problems or received any "Mod not found" in-game messages, we strongly recommend you to download this new release which contains fixes for these problems.

DP3 public beta testing

Our next release, DP3 is almost ready! As this is a fairly large release we have decided to run a few public tests. We want you to help by participating in a mass test to determine how the sync and stability of DP3 holds up, as these are obviously critical areas for players. This public testing will be done with the "light" version of the client, which does not include the server, server module SDK, or the map editor.

For our initial test, we will ONLY test general gameplay, using a gamemode called "fmjdm". This gamemode was chosen for 3 reasons:
1) It has the same city-wide style of the most popular servers
2) It is the only gamemode of this style that is currently DP3 compatiable, due to scripting changes
3) Gamemodes of this type brought out some of the worst bugs in DP2.

The timeframe of this testing is not set in stone. The start and length of the testing depends on how quickly people show up and how well the testing goes.

The testing will be run on IRC at #mta-pubtest. See our section about IRC for information on how to use IRC.

Additionally, we have a mailing list to let you know when we are about to begin releasing files for testing on IRC. To join this list, sign up here: beta.mtasa.com . However, it will be required that you join #mta-pubtest during testing if you wish to participate.

A small update for Multi Theft Auto: Deathmatch DP2 has been released that incorporates a new server browser provided by game-monitor.com and some minor tweaks to the account system and the installer. This upgrade has no other changes from DP2 except for these fixes. We strongly recommend all Deathmatch players download this update to restore the server browser to working order.

All-Seeing Eye and server-browser termination

As you may know, all our Multi Theft Auto versions up until now have relied on UDPSoft's All-Seeing Eye system to list game servers you can play on. UDPSoft were bought out by Yahoo! back in September 2004.

Today, the acquisition by Yahoo! has resulted in the unfortunate shutdown of the entire All-Seeing Eye network. As a result, the server browser functionality in all released Multi Theft Auto versions will no longer work.
